Recipients of the 2009-10 academic year Iowa-Illinois Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association scholarship awards are:

• Katlyn Burney, daughter of Dennes and Nancy Burney, Blue Grass, IA, will attend Iowa State University.

• Haley Kitchell, daughter of Michael and MarySue Kitchell, Milan, IL, will attend Illinois Wesleyan University.

• Nicholas Mizeur, son of Scott and Lisa Mizeur, Moline, IL, will attend Olivet Nazarene University.

• Nicole Woodson, daughter of Judy Woodson, Davenport, IA, will attend Luther College.

Six years ago the chapter established additional scholarships in memory of Sergeant Paul Fisher. SGT Fisher, a flight engineer with Company F, 106th Aviation, deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The CH-47 Chinook helicopter that he was aboard was shot down by a missile west of Baghdad. He sustained multiple injuries and later died.

SGT Fisher was a quiet man that believed actions spoke louder than words. He was a man who lived with truth, honor, and respect. He knew hard work was the key to your own success. May we always remember the sacrifices he made so that our journey in life can be paved with freedom. This year the SGT Fisher scholarships are sponsored by American Ordnance LLC. The recipients of the SGT Paul Fisher Scholarship Awards for academic year 2009-10 are:

• Dennes Burney, son of Dennes and Nancy Burney, Blue Grass, IA, will attend Iowa State University.

• Justine Jackovich, daughter of Vincent and Denise Jackovich, Eldridge, IA, will attend either Central College or the University of Northern Iowa.

The National Defense Industrial Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense through industrial preparedness. It is the premier organization representing all facets of the defense and technology industrial base and serving all military services.

The Iowa-Illinois Chapter is highly active throughout the state of Iowa and the western third of Illinois in service to the community. Activities include an active scholarship program, sponsorship of numerous community events, support of the Veterans community, and an active seminar program.

The chapter has awarded $25,500 to 38 students since 1994.
